Liberty Knocks Off Castro Valley; Remains (unofficially) Unbeaten

Castro Valley, CA
With 5:56 to go in the game, Liberty running back Alex Espinoza ran in from 3-yards out for his second touchdown of the night to give the Lions a 28-21 lead that they would not give up. Liberty did not trail Castro Valley at any point Friday night.

Ivan Oseguera got the call as starting quarterback for liberty and led the team in rushing out of the option with 148 rushing yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. A big 38-yard rush set up the Lions final score.

The Castro Valley Trojans seemed to match Liberty at every turn. After seeing Liberty march down and score on the opening drive, Namane Modsie had a strong 19-yard run to set up a Kevin Galvan QB-sneak to tie the game at seven. Modsie would finish with a modest 77 yards on 12 carries. As a team Castro Valley rushed for 295 yards. Demeryah Lane led the team with 34 carries for 156 yards.

Liberty did not present much of a deep passing game, with the exception being at the end of the second quarter. With 1:15 left in the half, Joe Tolentino was brought into the game, and immediately paid dividends. The play sequence was: 37-yard completion to Josh Jackson. 22-yard completion to Oseguera. 12-yard completion to Conor Green. 9-yard draw play by Cody Maghuyop for touchdown with 25 seconds left. Tolentino would go 3-3 for 73 yards on the drive.

NOTES-------------------

  • Despite losing a fumble in the 2nd quarter, Liberty forced two turnovers in the 2nd half to maintain a turnover difernce of +1 on the season
  • Although the stats may not show it, Liberty defended the rush well against Castro Valley.  Late in the game the Lions used the run-blitz effectivly
  • Joe Tolentino led the team in passing going 4-8 for 84 yards in limited action
