Brentwood Bowl Recap (with audio)

Liberty Defeats Heritage for First Time in School History

Lions Secure Playoff Birth With 14-7 Win

Brentwood, Calif.

With 5:26 to go in the 4th quarter Friday night, Ivan Oseguera scored the biggest touchdown of his career at Liberty.  A short drive set up by an excellent defensive stand and a poor punt that put the Lions at the Heritage 30, was capped when the Liberty signal caller ran over right end to score the only touchdown for Liberty. On the ensuing point-after attempt, Oseguera pulled up the snap and fired a cross-field pass to Dylan Gilfoy in the left corner of the end zone on a fake PAT attempt.

Liberty vs Antioch TONIGHT

After a (nearly) perfect non-league start to the season, the Liberty Lions retrun to action tonight to face the Antioch Panthers in the Bay Valley Athletic League opener for both teams.  Antioch (1-4) has lost it’s last four games coming into tonight, after beating Rodriguez in week 1. Liberty (3-2**) has officially won its last 3 outings, including a 42-12 blowout of Oakland Tech two weeks ago.
Historically over the past several season, league play has been particularly tough for Liberty.  The Lions only have 2 BVAL wins since 2006, both of which were against Antioch in 2010 and 2011.

NOTES---- Antioch holds an all time record of 35-16-1 over Liberty since they began playing each other in 1936, the lone tie occurring in 1937. The teams have met every season since 1993 when both teams joined the BVAL.

**should be 5-0 if not for 2 forfeits for an ineligible player.

Ivan Oseguera got the call as starting quarterback for liberty and led the team in rushing out of the option with 148 rushing yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. A big 38-yard rush set up the Lions final score.

Liberty Defeats Hayward on Homecoming

It was supposed to be the biggest night for the Liberty High School football team in nearly twenty years.  It was supposed to be the night in which they fought for their third consecutive victory of 2013.  Fate had other plans.

As it turned out, Liberty would be going for their first official victory of the season and picked it up with a decisive, albeit sloppy 18-6 win over Hayward Friday night.

OPINION- Setback, or Rallying Point--Its Up To the Players

On Thursday afternoon, it was announced that the Liberty High School Football team would have to forfeit it's first two wins of the season after self reporting to the North Coast Section (NCS) an ineligible player being used. Wins of 50-30 over Concord and 48-7 over Merril West wiped from the record book. Prior to that announcement, Liberty was on its way to possibly their best start in 20 years going into homecoming against Hayward.

In a situation like this, one can assume there is much anger among players, coaches and parents. Anger with the player who was ineligible. Anger with the coach for not catching the problem sooner. Anger with administration for self-reporting the infraction. Anger with the NCS for imposing the penalty.

But the real question here is how will this incident affect the future of the football program. Will it be a set back or a rallying point.  That is entirely up to the players on the field.

BREAKING- Liberty Forfeits 1st 2 Wins of Year

As reported by the Bay Area News Group today, Liberty High Football has forfeited their first two wins of the 2013 season.  The team self-notified officials of the use of an ineligible player.

Off to their best start in nearly 20 years, the Lions now go into the homecoming match-up against Hayward with an 0-2 record.

More on this story as it develops.

Liberty vs Hayward PREVIEW

VS

Hayward (0-2)                                     Liberty (2-0)

The Liberty Lions look to open the season 3-0 for the 1st time since 1995 at the expense of the Hayward Farmers on Friday night.

Junior wide receiver Alex Hull has been the standout performer so far on the young year.  After returning four punts for touchdowns in the first two weeks of the year, he made his presence felt last week on offense as well, reeling in a 49 yard pass from Joe Tolentino for a touchdown.,

Liberty Vs West RECAP

Liberty steamrolled the Wolfpack on Friday night with a 48-7 win of Merril West in Tracy.  Once again it was Alex Hull who stole the show, with two punt returns for touchdowns, both from outside of 80 yards.

Joe Tolentino was accurate again going 7-8 for 145 yards. His one touchdown pass was a 49-yarder to the aforementioned Hull.

Defensively, Liberty only allowed 163 yard of total offense, only 4 of which was through the air, as Kyle Hunt of West completed only 1 pass.

Concord (0-1)                                      Liberty (1-0)

The Lions battled back from a 14-2 deficit to defeat the Concord Minutemen on the 30th of August by a score of 50-30.

Junior quarterback Joe Tolentino finished the game 13-18 for 217 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.  He would also score the tying touchdown on a 5 yard scramble.
